Younan Nowzaradan is an Iranian-American surgeon, specializing in vascular surgery and bariatric surgery. He is best known for appearing on My 600-lb Life on which he helps morbidly obese people lose weight.
Early Life and Education
Younan Nowzaradan was born on October 11, 1944, in Tehran, Iran, but he is of Assyrian origin. He is currently 75 years old, as of 2020.
He attended the University of Tehran where he received a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1970. In the following year, he attended the Medical Orientation Program at Saint Louis University and completed a Rotating Surgical Internship at St. Johns Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
Television Career: Appeared on ‘My 600-lb Life’
Younan Nowzaradan is a member of the American College of Surgery. In 2012, he was cast on TLC television show My 600-lb Life and ever since he is helping morbidly obese people lose weight which the network documents on the show.
He has also been a part of Channel 4 television show Body Shock (on episodes “Half Ton Dad”, “Half Ton Teen”, and “Half Ton Mum.”) has also published two books Last Chance to Live (2017) and The Scale Does Not Lie, People Do (2019).

Malpractice Accusations
In 2007, Younan Nowzaradan was sued by Colleen Shepard claiming that he didn’t inform her daughter Tina Shepard, who underwent liver surgery, of the risks involved with gastric bypass surgery before her death.
Later in 2012, a woman filed a lawsuit claiming that Nowzaradan and the hospital didn’t properly do treatment of her husband which him to die after a procedure.
In the same year, a patient Michelle Park sued him and his anesthesiologist for malpractice claiming that they left a 6.69-inch tubing piece during a procedure.
Later in June 2017, a patient sued Nowzaradan for $1,000,000 claiming that he botched their abdominoplasty which caused a “deformed abdomen,” and “extreme pain.”
Later that year, a 72-year-old woman filed a lawsuit against Nowzaradan claiming that he left a steel connector and tubing inside of her.
