He is the only child of Rosmarie Dolly Chrysler and James Patrick Robertson. He was raised in his home town in Ontario. After the divorce, Robbie’s mother told him that his biological father was a gambler Alexander David Klegerman. His biological father was killed in a hit and run accident.

Robbie Robertson was previously married to Canadian journalist Dominique Bourgeois. The couple dated for sometimes and tied knot in 1967. 

Robertson also welcomed three children two daughters Alexandra and Delphine and a son Sebastian Robertson.
