Career
Maria started her professional journalism career as a general assignment reporter for Channel 23 in 1983. She was made the senior political correspondent for Univision in 1984.
She started working for Telemundo Network since 1993. She worked for Telemundo for about three decades until 2002. Elvia was then given her news shows by America TV 41 in 2002.
However, she left the channel and started working for Channel 22. The channel was later named Mega TV after it was owned by Raul Alarcon. There she ran the program Polo Opuestos which was also renamed and made Maria Elvira Live!.
During her career, she has interviewed many renowned personalities like Fidel Castro, John Jairo Velásquez, Augusto Pinochet, Yoani Sanchez, and Mother Teresa. Maria also interviewed former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
Maria Elvira is also trying her luck in politics and won the Republican primary on 28th August 2018 by a margin of 15 points. However, she lost the general election to Democratic nominee Donna Shalala by 52%. For the forthcoming elections, Elvira is considered as a strong candidate for Florida’s 27th Congressional District in the US House.

Elvira studied at the Deerborne School of Coral Gables and completed her graduation from Miami Dade College. She received her Bachelor in Arts in Communication from the University of Miami in 1983. Maria received her Masters of Public University from Harvard University-affiliated John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1995.
The 61-years-old American journalist has been married and divorced twice. She now lives with her two daughters. She married her second husband Renzo Maietta, a home designer, and builder in 1999.
