J Balvin: Short Biography

Early Life and Childhood

José Álvaro Osorio Balvín was born on May 7, 1985, in the Columbian town of Medellin.

The son of economist and business owner, José Álvaro Osorio Sr., and his wife, Alba Mery Balvin, José spent his childhood in his hometown.

At 16, José moved to Oklahoma as part of an English-exchange program, but soured on the experience and moved to New York City to live with an aunt where he began working in menial jobs.

He finally had enough and moved back to Columbia. Nonetheless, the whole experience made him appreciate reggaeton artists like Daddy Yankee, and rappers like Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and P. Diddy.

He adopted their musical style and made the rounds of the local clubs in Medellin, building a strong online following. Balvin also attended EAFIT University, where he pursued a degree in international business. He ended up dropping out after seven semesters to pursue his musical career.
