When Did Bong Joon-ho Earn His International Fame? Will Parasite Win Him An Oscar?

The 51-year-old South Korean film director and screenwriter rose to international fame with his work in the feature film Memories of Murder starring Song Kang-ho and Kim Sang-Kyung.

The film’s cinematography along with Song Kang-ho’s performance earned wide praise with positive feedbacks.    

In a similar way, in 2017, his action-adventure film Okja premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. In 2019, Bong’s black comedy thriller film titled Parasite premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival winning the Palme d’Or.

Following the achievement, Bong became the first Korean director to win the award. His film also won the Best Foreign Language Film at the 77th Golden Globe Awards with him being nominated for Best Director and Best Screenplay for his work.   

Most importantly, Parasite became the first South Korean film to receive an Academy Award nomination in any category. The film was made under the budget of ₩13.5 billion ($11 million USD) and grossed over $165.4 million USD in the box office.

Additional Fact: The movie also won the $60,000 Sydney Film Prize at the Sydney Film Festival.

On the other hand, Bong was nominated for Academy Awards in the category of Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture. He is the fourth Asian filmmaker Hiroshi Teshigahara, Ang Lee, and Akira Kurosawa to be nominated for the Academy Award.  

Likewise, he is the first South Korean director to be nominated for the Oscar.
