William Stephen Belichick was born on 16th April 1952 in Nashville, Tennessee, to Jeannette Munn and Steve Belichick. He holds American nationality and has Croatian ancestry.
He was raised in Annapolis, Maryland, and went to Annapolis High School, graduating in 1970. He then enrolled at Phillips Academy for a postgraduate year to improve his test scores and grades. He later joined Wesleyan University, where he played center and tight end.

Following his graduation in 1975, he took a $25 per week job as an assistant to Baltimore Colts head coach Ted Marchibroda. The following year, he joined the Detroit Lions as their assistant special teams’ coach.
