Joy Behan was born Josephine Victoria Occhiuto on October 7, 1942, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, United States. Her father, Gino Occhiuto, was a truck driver for Coca-Cola while the mother, Rose Carbone, was a seamstress.

Joy went to Queens College and earned a BA in sociology in 1964. After that, in 1966, she holds an MA degree in English from Stony Brook University. Also, the actress enrolled at Lindenhurst Senior High School

5 feet 6 inches tall, Behar is married to Steve Janowitz on August 11, 2011. The couple began dating in 1982 and announced their engagement in March 2009. They, however, called off their relationship after a while. 

Prior to this, Hall Pass actress was married to college professor Joseph Behar aka Joe Behar. The duo exchanged wedding vows on January 1, 1965.  

The pair has a daughter, Eve Behar Scotti, and through her, they even share a grandson, Luca. Joy divorced her ex-spouse separated on March 19, 1981.
